Cave Lake Trails

Intro: With four miles of new trail Cave Lake now offers some of the finest single-track in the area. The new trail is especially fun for bikes but also offers plenty of scenic vistas and enjoyable opportunities for Hiking and Equestrian. These trails are set in a beautiful basin with a lake and limestone cliffs and is easily one of the most scenic spots in all of White Pine County. Combined they have about 12.5 miles of signed single-track trail with more on the way meaning you can easily spend the good part of a day out here. If you have a high clearance vehicle or don't mind punishing your car a little bit be sure to check out Cave Mountain and the Success Loop, two gorgeous drives to fill the rest of the afternoon. The State Park also has two campgrounds with hot showers that fill up quickly in the summertime.

Advisories: Cave Lake State Park is a fee area so please pay all applicable fees on your visit. New trails construction is underway for this trail system during the Summer and Fall of 2006. Trail crews will be present at this time. For more information see the Projects section.

The Trails

New Trail (Unnamed)
Difficulty: More Difficult
Length: 7.5 miles (loop), 1,050'' elevation gain
Notes: Loop this with the Steptoe Creek and the main road. The most difficult part is the climbing in the beginning and then get ready for an awesome long descent. For a longer outing throw the Cave Creek Trail into the loop.

Cave Creek Trail
Difficulty: Easiest
Length: 3.7 miles (loop), 590' elevation gain
Notes: The most difficult part again is the altitude combined with a little bit of climbing, if you get through that part the trail itself is quite easy. For a longer outing combine this with the Steptoe Creek Trail.

Steptoe Creek Trail
Difficulty: More Difficult
Length: 3 miles (out and back), 150' elevation gain
Notes: The narrowness of the trail and the steeper side slope make this a bit more challenging, not a ton of climbing though. For a longer outing combine this with the Cave Creek Trail.

Overlook Trail
Difficulty: Most Difficult
Length: 3.5 miles, 1,000' elevation gain
Notes: This is a huffer with a lot of tight switchbacks and some steep climbing but you'll be rewarded with some spectacular views.

Trail Descriptions

Getting There: From Ely head south on Hwy 50/93 for 7 miles. Take a left and follow the signs to Cave Lake State Park.

Directions for the New Trail, Loop: As you are heading up the Highway toward Cave Lake you will see a turnout on your right, park hear (this loop goes by several other places to park so you can start anywhere, just be sure to pay all applicable fees). The Steptoe Creek Trail takes off from here. Follow Steptoe Creek Trail as far as you can towards the lake paralling the road until there is no other option except to cross a couple of bridges and end up on the main road again. Follow the road up to the lake and to the trailhead on the far side. From this trailhead follow the trail across the white bridge and take a right. On your left you'll see a faint trail, follow this. Eventually it turns into a real trail and climbs up from the lake. Keep climbing and eventually you'll see the new trail on your right, it's signed with a map. Follow this all the way down back to Steptoe Creek and where you parked.

Directions for Cave Creek Trail, Loop: Park at the trailhead just past the paved road on your right that goes up to the actual lake. There will be a trailhead with a kiosk. You'll see a trail coming in across the creek in front of you, this is the Cave Creek Trail. To do a loop I would recommend heading up the paved road past the lake to where it turns to dirt. Go for another .8 miles until you see a two-track dirt road on your left. Go up this and climb for about 1.8 miles until you see signs for the Cave Creek Trail. Go left and follow the trail back to where you parked.

Directions for Steptoe Creek Trail: As you are driving up State Route 486 to Cave Lake State Park you will see a numer of turnouts on your right. Park at the last one before you get to the paved road that goes up to the actual lake. You'll see a wood sign in front of you for the Steptoe Creek Trail. Follow the trail, parallelling the road you just came up. When you get to the end either turn around and go back on the trail or hop onto the paved road to get back to your car that way.

Directions for Overlook Trail: Follow the paved road that goes to Cave Lake, go past the lake and turn right just before the road turns to dirt. You'll see a restroom, a parking area, and kiosk with a map of the trails. Park here and follow the trail. At the Y intersection go left and follow the trail back around to this point.
